Quick answer
A 9 hour shift plus a commute often means 10 hours or more, which is too long for most dogs to go without a potty break or a visit. Plan to split the day so the longest stretch alone is about four to five hours for a healthy adult dog, and shorter for puppies and seniors.
Use a midday visit from a walker, neighbor or friend, daycare on some days, or a lunch trip home. Before work, give a walk with time to sniff and a food puzzle. After work, keep the hello calm, then walk and play. If your dog shows signs of distress when alone, such as nonstop whining, chewing at doors or accidents, the problem is likely stress about being alone, not just the hours. That needs short practice absences and cover on workdays, not more time alone.

Why is a 9 hour shift really 10 or 11 hours?
Add the commute, a lunch break you cannot leave, and a few minutes of traffic, and a "9 hour shift" quickly becomes 10 or 11 hours away. That is a long time for any dog to hold their bladder, and a long time with nothing to do. Our guide on how long a dog can be left alone breaks down realistic alone time by age.
Schedule changes also matter. The ASPCA lists an abrupt change in how long a dog is left alone as a known trigger for separation anxiety, with the example of an owner who goes from working at home to being away six or more hours. If you just started a long shift, introduce it gradually if you can.
What does a sample day for a 9 hour shift look like?
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:00 am | Potty break, then a 20 to 30 minute walk with lots of sniffing |
| 6:45 am | Breakfast in a puzzle feeder or a short training game |
| 7:30 am | Calm, quiet exit. A long lasting chew or frozen food toy in the safe space |
| 11:30 am to 12:30 pm | Midday visit: walker, neighbor, friend, or a daycare day instead |
| 5:30 pm | Low key hello, potty break, then a walk |
| Evening | Dinner, play, a brain game and a last potty break |
With a visit in the middle, the longest stretch drops to around five hours. If the shift starts later, slide the whole table. The ASPCA recommends at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity a day for dogs with anxiety, ideally before you leave, plus food puzzles and chews. Our mental stimulation games are quick ways to tire your dog's brain in the morning.
What cover does not cost a fortune?
- Swap with a neighbor who works from home, in return for help with their pets or plants.
- Mix daycare and a walker, for example daycare twice a week and a walker on the other days.
- Family or roommates covering the longest days.
- Ask about remote days or a later start once or twice a week.
- Bring your dog to work, if your workplace allows calm, friendly dogs.
A partial fix still helps. Every day your dog stays under their limit is a good day. Our calm-exit plan for working owners has more ideas.
Coping or anxious? How do you check before you plan?
A plan for a dog who is bored is not the same as a plan for a dog who panics. Set up a camera for the first hour after you leave on a normal workday. The American Kennel Club also recommends audio or video of your dog while you are away as one of the best ways to see what is really going on. A dog who protests briefly and then sleeps is coping. A dog who whines, paces, pants or scratches at the door for a long time is distressed. The ASPCA notes that dogs with separation anxiety often start showing distress within minutes of being left.
If your dog is distressed, longer days alone will not help them get used to it. The ASPCA advises that during training a dog with separation anxiety should not be left alone beyond what they can handle, and that most are fine with any person present. Our guide on how long a dog with separation anxiety can be left alone walks through finding that limit.
How do you set up the space for a long day?
- A safe, gated area with a bed, fresh water and room to stretch out.
- Safe chews and a food toy, removed when you are home so they stay special.
- A comfortable temperature, with blinds partly closed if your dog barks at the street.
- For crate trained dogs, a crate only if your dog is relaxed in it and the stretch is short. A full shift in a crate is too long.
What should coming home after a long day look like?
The ASPCA suggests calm hellos and goodbyes. Say hi quietly, take your dog out, and give the big attention once they have settled. This lowers the contrast between being home and being away. Then give your dog the best part of your evening: a sniffy walk, a game and some cuddle time.
When should you see your vet?
See your vet if your dog suddenly cannot hold it as long, drinks or pees more than usual, or if alone time problems start out of nowhere. If your dog panics or injures themselves when left, ask about a referral to a veterinary behaviorist or a qualified behavior consultant.
What else do owners ask?
Is it cruel to have a dog if I work long shifts?
No, many dogs live happily with working owners. The key is a midday break, enough exercise and a dog who is comfortable alone.
Can I use pee pads instead of a midday walk?
Pads can be a backup, but they do not replace exercise, company or a check on your dog.
What about 12 hour shifts?
That is too long without a visit for nearly every dog. Plan for daycare or two visits.
